| Kyle Andrews: Sushi [Click here to download MP3] Nashville, that southern gem, has a way of distilling fun and fervent artists - Country mostly. But even though the milieu is speckled by banjos and ten-gallon hats, you’re still likely to find a variety of music that’s just as tasty-earthy as the okra. Kyle Andrews is a synth pop wizard – an example of the new artist (patronless, inventive and of good humor). Truth be told, Andrews did much of the recording for his recent release “Real Blasty” in his basement. What this fresh tech guru is presenting goes beyond conventional electronica and pop – it’s got a shot of life, an form of intimacy unexpected for someone so new to the scene To put it simply, Andrews makes fun music. He is memorable not only with his idiosyncratic dance noise, but the punchy, beautifully rendered lines of careful thought. This sample gives you a hint at the capabilities and possibilities of this Southern hopeful. “Sushi” is punctuated by funky-happy interludes (the toy piano, whoops and processed claps) that have the unfettered youth of a bounce house. Andrews combines the oddball delight of Tough Alliance with the sincerity of Pete Yorn. Between beeps and saw buzzes, Andrew’s voice rings out clear and clean. A fine compilation of the best in today’s indie pop culture. The product? Pure, quirky Andrews. “I’m giving you a haircut / Walking to the sushi-mart / Shopping at the Goodwill / Learning how to swing dance.” Anything else? Creating, perhaps, some of the most honest music we’ve heard in quite some time. If you were to walk by the bars in Nashville on a hot summer night, when the light is as thick and syrupy as sweet tea, when everyone is finding their pigeon holes, you will probably hear a lot of the same: Faith, Kenny and maybe Cash if you’re lucky. But it’s this culture, this environment, that makes Kyle Andrews such a shining star. No doubt he would radiate on other canvases as well. “Could we have a moment?” Andrews queries – the strings dripping, the bass dropping like an atom bomb. We would suggest you give him a few.
